SDI - EDU for regional and urban planning, financed by the EU Lifelong Learning Programme – Leonardo da Vinci. CZ/09/LLP-LdV/TOI/134010

Area of action: education for regional and urban planning with the support of Spatial Data Infrastructire (SDI) – new and wider definition for Geographic Information Systems, including also the network technologies and ways of use of geographical data and information via Internet.

Overall Objective

SDI-EDU will develop training environment supporting spatial planners and architects in utilisation of  Spatial Data Infrastructure. The training environment produced will demonstrate the utility of our approach for developing educational programmes that will increase understanding of SDI building on local and regional level and the tools used to make decisions that affect regional development. The defined content will stress awareness of environmental, economic, and social factors. As recognized by the SDI, this increased understanding will allow more informed and equitable planning.

The general objective of SDI-EDU is to adapt SDI by planners by improving knowledge about all aspects technological, data, political, legislation, but also business objective.

The SDI-EDU project will focus on building an interoperable Internet training architecture, where users will not only use training materials, texts, but also access and visualise much of the spatial data.

    

Deliverables and outcomes

According to the objectives of the project, there are two main outcomes. The first one will be the establishment of innovative internet based platform (webportal)  for vocational training and eLearning to preset group of final beneficiaries interested in the field of regional, spatial and urban planning, GIS technologies, etc.

The platform will include components for

  • Video lecturing
  • URM implementation
  • Tools for mobile learning
  • Metadata with regional specific information
  • Catalogue
  • Geohosting

    

The second part of the SDI-EDU solution will be focused on practical education, which will share outputs from past or previous European projects like HUMBOLDT or NaturNet Redime. Its content will be represented by multimedia and geographical data, studies, and simulations that demonstrate some of the applications of planning and sustainable development. Here the aim will be to extend from knowledge at the global scale to detailed, local-scale information demonstrating aspects of planning at the level of different municipalities.

All learning materials of the project will be available via the SDI-EDU web portal, where users will find appropriate learning objects to lead them through the training process. Interaction with end users throughout the project will provide feedback to the project partners to ensure that the tools are optimized.
